Located on the east coast of Corfu, Benitses is an ancient settlement dating from Roman times and is surrounded by tree-covered mountains, which fall almost to the seashore. The village centers on a small harbour where fishing boats moor, and beaches stretch along the seashore.
The old settlement preserves its traditional character. Behind the old fishermen’s cottages which face the pedestrianised harbor square with its tree-shaded park, there are ruins of a Roman bathhouse, while in the valley behind the village you find a natural spring in a glade of plane trees.
Benitses was one of the first communities in Greece to operate its own biological sewage plant, and consequently the sea is crystal clear. The resort offers all necessary facilities. Hotel, rooms to rent, restaurants, bars, steak houses, tavernas and water sports are at your disposal. Don’t forget to visit local Shell Museum a unique display of shells from around the world.
Benitses is not a very busy resort, however offers very relaxing holidays for families. Since it is close to Corfu Town, it is considered to be one of the best-positioned resorts in Corfu.
Close to Benitses, within a private field there have been brought to light the ruins of a villa of the Roman period, with nice baths, well preserved. Visitors are welcome. On the hill above the settlement you will find the springs that the Venetian used for water supply of Corfu. In the same area there is the small church of Aghia Paraskevi with an excellent view of the sea.
At a distance of 2 kilometers northern to Benitses, it is found the old bridge constructed by the German emperor, who used it to go to the beach when he stayed in Achilleion. One of the most worth seeing places in Benitses is the Museum of Sea. The Museum was established in 1989 and it contains exhibits from the exotic seas of Indian and Pacific oceans, but also from the Mediterranean Sea.
