Kontokali, one of the most famous tourist resorts in Corfu, is situated within a cove, very close to the capital Corfu, at a distance of 8 kilometers at the Northwest.
The village counts some 1600 permanent residents. At a distance of 2-3 nautical miles from the coast, out of the cove, it is found the small island of Lazaretto, with luxurious vegetation and trees. During the World War II, the German and Italian dominants of the island had used it as a concentration camp.
Accommodation is available within the village and in the area around. Food is abundant in the taverns of the area, where you will find fresh fish, local dishes and a wide range of Greek and international delicacies.
You may swim at the beautiful, cosmopolitan and crowded in summer, beach in front of the village, but the area around offers several alternatives too. Most of the beaches are popular and stylish. A local feast (“panighyri”) is organized in the village in May or June, in honor of Holy Spirit.
Kontokali is popular with couples and boat owners, the latter attracted by the marina, which along with Kontokali beach is the focal point of the resort. Kontokali beach is very clean; a mix of sand and fine shingle with shallow safe water gently sloping to the blue Ionian Sea. The beach has been awarded an EU blue flag. There is a smaller beach alongside, which is popular with locals. Even better beaches can be found at Gouvia.
There is a swimming pool and the large marina with cafés and tavernas popular with both locals and visitors. Kontokali enjoys the proximity of the popular and busier resorts of Gouvia and Dassia or the full on youth party resort of Ipsos.
Other popular Kontokali excursions are the Aqualand waterpark, the old Venetian shipyard at Gouvia, Achilleon Palace and picturesque Paleokastritsa. Holidays in Kontokali could include boat trips along the beautiful coast to visit caves and beaches, or further afield to the enchanting, unspoilt and characterful islands of Paxos and Antipaxos to the south of Corfu.
